Is it just me or do poems that rhyme take you out of the meaning of a poem and just make you think of the rhythm...like a song that has a good beat but little substance? I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with it, just does this happen to you?

e.g. Dude Looks Like a Lady by Areosmith had an awesome beat, rhythm, melody, but it was about a transsexual ("not that there is anything wrong with that" :) )

I guess what I'm asking is do you get more satisfaction from the way a poem is constructed (as far as rhyming words go) or the meaning beneath? Or is it both for you?

I'm sure many people will say both, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. :D

Peace

Personally, I think that a poem or song is really good when it strikes you from within and make you think about it for a very long time. Words have to be well-chosen, the rhyming scheme must be perfect, the rhythm must be catching, etc. In a nutshell, a poem is really a work of art when the poet does not only manage to transmit his or her message, but also captivates the reader and makes him or her want to read on until the very end. This is my opinion and there might be people who disagree with what I think. I may be right and I may be wrong. Feel free to criticize my opinion.

My poems rhyme and I'd like to think that I put enough thought into it to make it meaningful. I never put in a useless word, if something rhymes but means little/nothing I won't use it. And I've seen free verse poems that had no visible meaning either.
I think it all depends on the writer and if they really want to put forth the effort to make a meaningful poem rather than just going through the motions.

it's awesome when my poems do rhyme, but I would never sacrifice the meaning for a rhyme scheme personally

I think a good poem needs some rhythm to keep you interested to the end. When I listen to a song, it should have a meaning, while having a good beat to carry me through the words. I also don't think real poetry is about how horrible your day at school was, or the boy that wouldn't talk to you at lunch. There's nothing wrong with putting your thoughts out there for others to read, but that's what blogs are for. I agree that poetry is a work of art, that needs thought, and intention. The last chapter of Ecclesiastes has a verse that talks about the preacher choosing appropriate words to convey the meaning of his message. That's the way poetry should be. Sorry I'm so opinionated, but it had to be said.
